Be Happy It's Adar! 👑
Spice up your Rosh Chodesh Hallel with these fancy Purim ditties! Can you name all the tunes?
This Friday and Shabbat we celebrate Rosh Chodesh Adar!
Every month is known for the holidays within it, so we begin Adar with joy for Purim! We say, "Mishenichnas Adar, marbin b’simcha," "When Adar enters, we multiply our joy."
This is countercultural! It is the dead of winter. Especially this week... it's so cold and so dark! This time of year is the time when we most need joy. Adar is our Winter Happy Energy Light. Do you own one of those? People buy them to fabricate sunlight coming from outside. But Adar brings the joy coming from inside to radiate outward.Â
With this search for joy even in the dark, we realize that so much of this is about perspective. On Purim we say "V’nahafochu!" "Turn it upside down!"
A change in perspective. Turning things upside down.
Hafach הפך means to turn over, and if you flip the word over backwards, you have כפה, which is a covering (like a head covering).
In this time during covid we are covering up our faces with masks, something that we do every year on Purim too.
But though our faces are covered, what other ways can we metaphorically reveal ourselves, and open ourselves up to each other to find new ways of connection?Â
V’nahafoch hu! A change of perspective!
How can we look out at the cold winter and find warmth in our hearts!Â
How can we look out at the darkness and find light?
Where do we see joy, and how can we radiate it outward?
That is our mission this month and beyond.
Chodesh tov!
